Arrival
We’ve planned plenty of time to allow for train delays so of course everything is on time and we arrive feeling smug at Heathrow with hours to spare! It’s easy to while away the time with a coffee and reading and we are called to our boarding gate punctually. Then the problems start. A British Airways systems outage means that nothing can happen. Eventually we board and still have to wait. Then laughingly when the system works again they can’t move the aeroplane as the chocks are stuck! So not “chocks away”! We’re finally airborne 2.5 hours later than scheduled at 9pm and are hungry and gagging for a gin. We do manage a bit of sleep overnight and arrive at Johannesburg with an hour to get our connecting flight. We are escorted by a charming man who helps us navigate the rabbit warren and we manage to get on board and we arrive safely in Windhoek. Sadly however our bags do not!
We try to put on a brave face as we wearily meet our tour organiser and get details of our amazing trip. I’m wondering how I can manage with one pair of pants and a pair of thick cargo trousers! We have a delicious meal at Stellenbosch Wine Bar: fresh calamari, beef carpaccio, steak and Simon eats Oryx (which we think is antelope 🥴) Back in a taxi to find our bags!! Hooray. We will sleep well after all
